Introduced in 1985, the Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z (International Race of Champions) was coveted by Yankees and Southerners alike. A guido-mobile in the North (“Italian Rocco Out Cruisin”), every Earnhardt fan’s dream in the South. (When I was a teenage dirtbag, I bought a Z28 with the more subtle RS styling. IROC-Z insurance payments were pricier than car payments.) The IROC-Z was powered by either the top-of-the-line TPI 305-cu in. LB9 (215 hp) small block or the midline TPI 350-cu in. (190hp) small block. Even with the bigger engine, the lighter Mustang 5.0 still smoked the IROC-Z at the lights. And? These days, an IROC-Z in great shape with low ownership hammers for $30k – surpassing late-80’s Mustangs and Corvettes in value. It’s the IROC-Z’s turn. Downside: hit the gas and the ass and goes sideways.
