1987 Porsche 911 Turbo Slantnose

Tony’s Take: 👍 It took me decades to fall in love with a German car, and now I can’t get it out of my head. According to 911flachbau.com, the German automaker built 948 special order Porsche 911 Slantnose. ”Generation 1′ cars were manufactured in 1982 and 1983, ‘Generation 2’ cars were manufactured from 1983 to 1987, and the last of the ‘G-series’ 930 slantnose cars were manufactured between 1987 and 1989.” So now you know. It pays to also know this . . .

The Slantnose cars are all members of the Porsche Turbo “widowmaker’s” club. The combination of 300 hp and massive turbo lag in a rear-engined sports car caught more than a few drivers out (setting the stage for the “tricky handling” Porsche Carrera GT). That said, driven with respect, the Slantnose’s thrills are visceral in a way very few modern Porsches can replicate. And who doesn’t love the sound of an air-cooled 911 above 3k revs?

From a collector’s point-of-view, the “tea tray” spoiler Slantnose is a steal. Countaches are moon money at a mil. The Slantnose is a rocket ship waiting on the pad for a quarter of the price. Even at $250k, I say they’re severely undervalued. This Grand Prix White over Crimson Red and black BAT car is a well-preserved example: long time owner, clean Carfax, two Porsche Certificates of Authenticity, service records. What’s not to love? Downside: 46k miles “shown” and dentless body repair to the right rear fender.
