1989 Ford Mustang SSC Saleen Hatchback

Tony’s Take: 👍 The Foxbody Mustang was a hit that saved the model from the scrap heap of history. The 1989 Mustang GT 2-Door Hatchback was cheap ($31k in today’s money), nimble (precise steering, quadra-shock rear suspension, light weight) and fast (zero to sixty in 6.5 seconds). And oh-so-tuneable. After proving the point on the race track, Steve Saleen carved-out a niche selling modded Mustangs to muggles. The eventual Mustang Hall of Famer went all out for the ‘Stang’s 25th Anniversary. Assuming you like gray. And white. And yellow. Together. Forever.

Saleen’s minions blessed Ye Olde Windsor 5.0-liter V8 with polished aluminum valve covers, a 65mm throttle body, larger cylinder head ports, a high-performance air filter and a Walker Dynomax low-restriction exhaust with high-flow catalytic converters. The Ford Mustang SSC Saleen Hatchback was a big deal – the coolest guy in Southwest Philly had one. With just 161 made and its, uh, unique style, is still is. The model’s gaining momentum on the collector car circuit. Back in November ’21, BAT hammered an 11k miler for $76,777. Stock market dip be damned. This one’s going up. Downside: did he really have to sign the steering wheel?

  1. Growing up in a big city our dads didn’t drive exotic cars. In fact we never even seen them unless looking at a magazine and a hair salon. But that didn’t stop us from growing into the car guys we are. We learned to appreciate all cars without being so superficial. The 1989 SSC Foxbody was the hoods “930 Porsche”. In fact nine out of 10 hoodlums would’ve taken the foxbody. Here we are today when a low mile example trades for 50% of the 930 turbo. If I had the chance to take one car to a Philadelphia reunion it would be this car here. Why? Because in the big city being superficial won’t get you hugs and high fives. But staying true will.
Ladies and gentlemen the SSC Saleen is the Philadelphia street GOAT! Front streets one and only badass! #saleenmustang #FordMustang #SSCMustang #FoxBodyMustang #Stevesaleen #streetracing
