Tony’s Take: The Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC AMG 6.0 AMG’s V8 is ferocious – to the point where you’d be forgiven for thinking AMG stands for Added More Grunt.

In fact, it’s A for Hans Werner Aufrecht, M for Erhard Melcher and G for Großaspach. Engineer, engineer, first engineer’s place of birth.

In the early ’60’s Herr Aufrecht and Melcher built engines for Mercedes’ rally cars. When MB pulled the plug on the program, the two engineers quit and formed AMG, modifying Mercs for private race teams. AMG soon discovered a ready market for more muscular street legal Mercs.

Introduced in 1986, the Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC AMG 6.0 is the last of the uber-tuner’s coveted “pre-Mercedes” models (technically pre-DaimlerChrysler AG buyout).

AMG took a perfectly good Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC, bored the V8 engine to 6.0L (complete with AMG’s four-valve, dual-overhead-camshaft, three-piece, sand-cast cylinder heads), tweaked the suspension, upgraded the brakes and dressed it in a ‘Wide Body’ aero kit.

The AMG-fettled motor generates 380 hp @ 5500 rpm and puts 410 lb-ft of torque @ 4000 rpm underfoot. The four-seat two-door sprints from zero to sixty in under six seconds. It’s nimble enough – far more nimble than you’d think. And the Master of the Universe on Amphetamines look has stood the test of time.

Despite the long production run, AMG only made 50 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC AMG 6.0. So this is a rare vehicle. Downside: if ever car was ridden hard and put away wet, here it is. Mercedes makes brick sh*t houses on wheels. AMG makes them better. But 201k miles? This is not the low-mileage car you’re looking for.
